Hierve el agua

The natural wonder of Hierve el agua in southeast Oaxaca

At KOUA we believe Hierve El Agua is a unique natural wonder and a must for anyone visiting the Oaxaca region of Mexico. The literal translation of this site meaning “Boil the Water” was inspired by the mineral springs that come out of the ground here. Visitors can expect to enjoy the views of petrified waterfalls, hike across unique rock formations and have the chance to swim in mineral pools. When visiting Hierve El Agua most people arrange a hike tour from Oaxaca, at KOUA we recommend Zapotecos Tour Company, it is a smaller and more intimate tour of the area which is less rushed compared to other tours, this tour costs 350 pesos, equivalent to around 13 GBP. There is opportunity for you to visit food stands where you can try local cuisine and refreshing coconut drinks before watching the most breath-taking sunsets. A true natural wonder of Mexico.

Petrified Waterfalls

When visiting Hierve El Agua in the Mexican state of Oaxaca you will find a wonderful sight of two petrified waterfalls. These are natural mineral deposits formed over thousands of years that have spilled over the edge of the cliffs and trickled down the mountain side. Due to the waters high mineral content, at KOUA we recommend taking a break from your hike to go and soak in one of the natural pools at the top of the rock, as its reported to have natural healing qualities.
